He’s back! Yesterday, Tiger Woods teed off at Riviera Country Club for the Genesis Invitational, a tournament he now hosts as a part of the PGA circuit. Not only is Tiger playing for the first time in a while, but he is also debuting his new Taylormade line of gear ‘Sun Day Red’. This week has come with a lot of anticipation and excitement. Golf is in a much better place whenever Tiger is in the field. He brings palpable energy that permeates through the TV screen and carries with him a noticeable aura on and around the course.
Tiger boasted a respectable +1 in first-round play on Thursday, February 15th. Tiger looked fairly comfortable in the round one play, he wasn’t limping around and appeared confident in his shots and loose in his swings. He ranked 25th in driver distance averaging 304.10 yards in round 1 but hit only 55.56% of greens in regulation. His lack of G.I.R’s contributed to his 6 bogey round on Thursday, however, his 5 birdies helped propel him into contention to make the cut on Friday. The current projected cut after round 1 is +1, so Tiger needs to break par to showcase his new apparel and compete for a respectable finish this weekend.
Tiger’s new brand has taken the social media and golf worlds by storm. Some love it (me) and some hate it (Ross), but there is no denying it will likely take off (as everything Tiger touches turns to gold). The logo features a sprinting tiger comprised of 15 lines, used to mark the number of major championships Tiger has won thus far in his career. The name ‘Sun Day Red’ obviously comes from the red shirts he sports on the Sunday of every tournament. The red shirt is synonymous with winning, championships, unbelievable moments, and greatness. Apparel will go on sale starting May 1st.
I am thrilled to see Tiger back in action and playing more tournaments this year, hopefully, the list will include the 2024 Masters in April, but he’s made no commitments yet. Tiger is my favorite golfer of all time and has been ever since I got my first golf club. According to my parents, I knew Tiger was a golfer before I knew it was an animal… pretty funny. With that said, it is great to have him back and great to see golf fueled with more energy and pizazz. It will be a great joy to watch him Friday and hopefully throughout the weekend. Cheers to the weekend and cheers to Tiger.
